Chapter Twelve
The aroma of coffee brewing seeped inside Jack’s nose, waking him up. He stretched a long arm across the bed to pull Liza over, but she was missing. He opened his eyes to the bright light filling the room, hating it was morning already. Peeking at the clock only made it worse when he saw the time was ungodly for him. He never got up before nine unless it was an emergency.
He removed the sheet covering his nude body, willing himself to get up. There was a game tonight, and he had to be at the ballpark at noon to review yesterday’s tapes, attend team meetings, and then have workout. He sat up slowly. Every muscle in his body ached, but not as badly as his left knee. Immediately, he reached for his shoulder; that hurt the worst.
Jack sat up and dropped his legs on the side of the bed, and his left knee popped, causing him to whimper. “Damn, I’m falling apart after one game and sex,” he mumbled, rubbing his knee. It was tender and felt hot to the touch.
“Good morning,” Liza said as she came into the bedroom.
“Morning, babe. Where are you going?” He watched her rush around the bedroom getting dressed. The straight gray skirt and white blouse fit her perfectly. He imagined she’d look great in just about anything, but he’d prefer her naked and in bed with him right now.
“Sweetie, I have to go to work. I have two surgeries scheduled today. Oh, I made coffee; I slept too long to make any breakfast, sorry.”
“That’s okay. I’ll grab something to eat on my way home.” He really had to pee, but didn’t want to get up with her in the room. She would notice the pain he was in and make a big deal out of it. “Do you want to come to the game tonight?”
Liza finished putting on her earrings and turned to face him. “What time? I might be able to make it if nothing arises at the hospital or the office.”
“It’s a seven o’clock game tonight. If you can come earlier, I’ll give you a tour of the locker room before the guys start to file in.” He covered his legs with the sheet before she walked over to him.
“Jack, are you sure this is what you want?” she asked.
He nodded—even that hurt. “Never been so sure of anything in my life.”
When she put her hands on his shoulders, he winced. “What’s the matter… Oh my God, that bruise is awful.” She examined it. “Jack, I don’t like the way it looks.”
“Come on, Liza; I’m fine. It’s a minor contusion and will heal quickly.”
“That could be true, but a severe contusion can cause deep tissue damage and lead to complications that may keep you out of the game again. Baby, I’m not nagging, just concerned.”
If she was concerned about his shoulder, he definitely was not going to say a word about his knee throbbing like crazy. “Will you feel better if I tell you I’ll make sure to apply ice and put on a compression bandage?”
“No.
